I worked at Solexa.
No - its not derived from this at all ! The clusters technology came from
Manteia and was patented in 1999 by Turcatti et al. The chemistry is
completely novel and is also patented under Milton (et al) and Smith (et
al). Most of that work predates the church polony work and paper. For
further and more accurate attributions take a gander at the weeks Nature.

Thanks Clive, this

The paper you are citing has absolutely nothing to do with the Solexa
(Illumina) technology.
oops's that's my mis-citation, not Jim's.
'absolutely nothing' is a bit strong as, in an academic and non-patent
kind of way, Solexa tech is a derivative of this methodology.
What's the authoritative source for your 4 nucs 2 lasers?
Thanks,
