One easy way to get something like this:

rangesList <- seqapply(as(gr, "RangesList"), IntervalTree)

Then you'll have a RangesList of IntervalTree objects for range queries.

Might need latest IRanges svn for this to work reliably (problem with
subsetting IRanges with metadata).
