Abstract

Mycobacterium tuberculosis being the main disease causing pathogen of
Tuberculosis which has become a dreadful disease worldwide was studied and
the bacteria’s rapid rise in multidrug resistant property towards
antibiotics was pointed out. Mycobacterium tuberculosis cell wall was
observed to be having many unique characteristics which can be used to study
in more depth to understand new potential Tuberculosis drug targets. The
most promising enzymes and genes coding particular enzymes were studied
which can be used as a potential drug target for Tuberculosis.

Introduction

Tuberculosis (TB) one of the most dreaded infectious killers emerging as an
infectious diseases affecting the entire populations.[1,2] And in recent
years as a consequence of prolonged therapeutic exposure to drugs, a
troubling rise in the emergence of multi-drug resistant and extreme drug
resistant (XDR) strains.[2] Today more than five decades after the advent
of the first anti-TB drugs, the World Health Organization estimates that the
one third of the global population (more than two billion people) is
infected with the pathogen, *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* ( *Mtb*). . India,
China, Indonesia, Nigeria and South Africa rank first to fifth in terms of
the total number of incident cases. It is quite alarming that India ranks
first in the number of incidences.
Developing antituberculosis drug is a national requirement. *Open source
drug discovery * is becoming more popular among the young researchers; the
new volatile targets are being identified. Better leads for the discovery
are under consideration. Consolidation of major drug target of
antituberclosis research results in 4 classes: Cell wall synthesis, Electron
transport, Nucleic acid synthesis, Replication and Transcription.Devolpement
of drugs by considering above target may produce friutfull results.
Understanding and analyzing the target pathways will definitely help the
future research in this area.
