Only that there are many options, and it's not clear (to me) which
should be chosen.

No.  The (my) main goal at the moment is to make it more standalone and
allow the types to be more opaque - in other words, it shouldn't be
necessary to unpack e.g. SeqData to access it using ByteString
operators.
