I have been down this path, there is some support for JPEG in
com.sun.image.codec.jpeg.*
There is alot more support for most graphics types in the Java Advanced
Image Library (JAI 1.1). Not for the faint of heart though, very powerful
and somewhat confusing package. JAI is available free from Sun.
