At 9:00pm, Thursday, April 24th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
After a successful open house last Friday, the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch had it's first day with 2,000 plus birds since 1994 on Sunday, April 19th. 2,036 hawks of 10 different species were counted on Sunday, including 1,297 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 511 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 3 BALD EAGLES, and 2 OSPREY. A COMMON RAVEN was seen at Beamer on Saturday. Some warblers moved into the Hamilton Area this past week. PINE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER turned up at Shell Park, along with BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. Shorebirds seen locally include WILSON'S SNIPE on 11th Road East in Stoney Creek, UPLAND SANDPIPER on 10th Road East, and in a flooded field at 5th Road East & Powerline Road there were 244 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 16 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and 16 WILSON'S SNIPE. Other local reports include BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, RED-THROATED LOON, WINTER WREN and BROWN CREEPER at Shoreacres/Paletta Park, 24 HORNED GREBES and 6 RED-NECKED GREBES at LaSalle Marina, COMMON LOON at Desjardins Canal, COMMON RAVEN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, EASTERN PHOEBE, and NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the Burlington Mountain, VESPER SPARROW and SAVANNAH SPARROW in Carluke, plus BELTED KINGFISHER, four pairs of WOOD DUCKS, COMMON TERN, RED-NECKED GREBE, and 18 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS . in the Hendrie Valley. There were lots of yard reports this week, including EASTERN TOWHEE in Central Hamilton, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and VEERY on the Hamilton Mountain, GREAT EGRET in Caledonia, FOX SPARROW and HERMIT THRUSH in Oakville, and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, PINE WARBLER, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and HERMIT THRUSH in Mineral Springs. Out of town, WORM-EATING WARBLERS turned up at Rondeau Provincial Park and in Glencoe, a VERMILLION FLYCATCHER was seen on Saturday near Cayuga but has not been reported since, and a EURASION WIGEON was again at Lee Brown Pond near Long Point. 40 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and a SANDHILL CRANE turned up at Lee Brown while one observer was looking at the wigeon.
