Birders
Yesterday, while looking for songbirds south of Mitchell I found a
congregation of shorebirds in puddles in newly-planted fields far inland
from the Great Lakes. There was a large flock that included 40 Pectoral
Sandpipers, 10 Greater Yellowlegs, 12 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Dunlin in various
states of mounting and 20 Lapland Longspurs. I had only seen two LLs before
and here there were many. Some of the males were in breeding plummage.
The puddles are just south of the former Mitchell (Perth County) sewage
lagoons. When these ponds are rehabilitated to be appealing to shorebirds, I
predict that they will be a major draw for shorebirds at this time of year
as they are in the fall.
Directions: From Mitchell (Perth County)take Perth Road 23 south to the
first intersection. Turn left in County Line 32. The fields are south of the
road just east of the Thames River within sight of the sewage lagoons to the
north.
