OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY June 9 AT 9 AM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Highlights from the past week include a pair of RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS in Constance Bay in the same location as last year.
This is an old burnt woods area off Whistler Rd which runs off
Ritchie St in the village of Constance Bay. The birds were first
reported on June 3 and are being seen almost daily.
Two LEAST BITTERNS are still present as of June 6 in the wetland
between Nortel and the Equestrian Park and a Sedge Wren was still
singing in the tall grass near the ditch east of the cattail marsh
in the wetland on the 7th. This area can be accessed from the
bike trail at Corkstown Rd on the west side of Moodie Dr.
A few shorebirds were reported. On the 3rd, 3 Ruddy Turnstones
were on the Ottawa River at Deschenes on the Québec side at the
end of Vanier Rd. A report of a Stilt Sandpiper came in on the
5th from a wet field along March Rd north of Dunrobin. At the
Embrun sewage lagoons on the 8th there were approximately 7
Semipalmated Sandpipers, 2 late White-rumped Sandpipers and
numerous Wilson's Phalaropes. Otherwise there were only small
numbers of waterfowl at the lagoon, including a few Blue-winged
Teal and Northern Shovelers.
A Carolina Wren appeared briefly near Rockcliffe Park on the 3rd
in the same backyard where one was reported last year.
Warblers reported from the Huntmar Dr area and other areas were
the common breeding species such as Nashville, Yellow, Chestnut-
sided, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Northern
Waterthrush and Common Yellowthroat. A Mourning Warbler was heard
at Huntmar as well as on the ridge in the Britannia Conservation
Area on the 7th.
The traditional sparrows fields at Leitrim and Bowesville south of
the international airport were productive this weekend for 9
species of sparrows that breed here, including Clay-coloured,
Field, Vesper and Grasshopper. Both Willow and Alder Flycatchers
were singing along east Leitrim and west Bowesville on the 7th and
8th.
Thank-you. Good birding.
