Hi Everyone, A good day of butterflying turned into a great day of birding for 4 of us today. While taking part in the Rondeau Butterfly Count Sunday, Keith Burk, Jim Burk, Deb Lane and I found 4 good bird species (and 23 butterfly species) in our area. This morning, about 11:00, we heard 2 SEDGE WRENS singing in a grassy field. We didn't see the birds but they sang continuously from about 40 metres away. They were still singing when we returned at 5:15pm. A walk around the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons produced an unexpected AMERICAN AVOCET among the many early returning shorebirds. We also had an UPLAND SANDPIPER here. We then went to the Ridge Landfill where Keith works (unfortunately this place is private property to everyone else) and we wandered around until we located 2 female DICKCISSELS. They certainly acted very territorial towards our presence.
Directions: Blenheim Sewage Lagoons: Blenheim is located between Chatham and Rondeau Park. Exit the 401 at what they used to call Hwy. 40, exit #90. Go south towards Blenheim and follow the detour into town. At the main street in Blenheim (the stop light) turn right or west. Go out of Blenheim on this road (what they used to call Hwy.3) for approx. 1 km. Turn right (north) on the Lagoon Road. The lagoons are less than a km on the right. Visit the Blenheim Municipal Office in downtown Blenheim, beside the post office, for a free permit for the lagoons. To get to where the sedge wrens are, go back to Hwy.3 and turn right (west). Go to the village of Cedar Springs and again turn right (north). Travel north for about 2 km to the 16th Line. Turn left (west) and go exactly 1 km. There will be an alfalfa field and then a grassy field on the right (north) side of the road. Park here and listen. The wrens were actually in the grassy field, not the alfalfa.
