Bird Bander Position at the Tommy Thompson Park Bird Observatory for the
Fall banding season

A position is available for a Master or Sub-permitted bander (permit must
state "band passerines" "use mist nets") to assist with a new migration
monitoring station that is being established at Tommy Thompson Park (on the
Leslie St. Spit on the Toronto lakeshore). This is a joint project managed
by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and the Toronto Bird
Observatory (TBO).

The position will be for an 8 to 10 week period from early August to early
November 2003. The applicant must be able to commit to a minimum of 3 days a
week during this period. The successful applicant will receive an honorarium
of $80 - $120 / day, depending on experience and availability. The bander
will need to provide their own accommodation within easy reach of the Leslie
St. Spit in Toronto ON, and will need to provide their own transportation to
the site (although some car-pooling may be arranged).

Applicants should have passerine banding experience to at least sub-permit
level and either a good familiarity with eastern North American songbirds or
a proven ability to rapidly learn new birds. The bander will work under the
direction of the park naturalist. Along with banding duties, the successful
applicant should be able to provide interpretive information to the many
interested people visiting the banding station. The applicant should be a
friendly, approachable person who is able to convey to the general public
how and why bird banding is done, and the significant role it plays in
conservation both on a broad and local level. The successful applicant will
also be requested to participate in a short TRCA park operations information
session.

Our first season was this past spring (May 2003), and was quite successful
both in numbers and species of birds, and volunteer interest and assistance.
The spring season ran for 30 days, and we banded 870 birds of 66 species.
Our top species for the spring were: Swainson's Thrush, Yellow Warbler, Gray
Catbird, and Magnolia Warbler.

The Spit area has proven over the years to be an excellent location for
observing migration and has hosted more than its fair share of oddities.
This position will be an excellent opportunity for someone looking to
experience an Ontario fall migration in a comfortable setting, within easy
reach of downtown Toronto. You would also be helping to initiate this
exciting new project.
