RARE BIRD REPORT

There has been a report of a GRAY KINGBIRD seen at the Amherstview Sewage
Ponds [page 36, quad D54] {page 44, quad N3}on the morning and afternoon of
July 26. The observers were Owen Weir and Harold Bridger.



AMHERST I.

Bruce Di Labio reported: "July 27th, I birded the east point of Amherst
Island ( KFN
property). The shorebirding was very good with 14 species. Highlights
included 1 adult breeding plumaged LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (calling) which
flew in with a breeding plumage STILT SANDPIPER and landed along the
shoreline, 2 adult SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 19 adult SANDERLING in various
stages of moult, 3 juvenile LEAST SANDPIPER, and 3 juv. WILSON'S PHALAROPE.
On the gravel bar were 19 CASPIAN TERNS, 16 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and 3
COMMON TERN. A quick check in the "Owl Woods" produced zero owls but a
number of E. TOWHEE were singing. A visit to Amherstview
Sewage Lagoon revealed 121 adult (moulting) BONEPARTE'S GULL and one juv.
WILSON'S PHALAROPE. All cells had high water levels, with no exposed
mudflats."


DIRECTIONS: The ferry to Amherst I. leaves from a dock at the western side
of Millhaven. It is reached from the 401 by taking exit 593 south to
Millhaven. Jog right about 100 m. On Hwy 33 to the dock. The ferry costs
$5.00 Cdn return and starts at 6:20 a.m. Then 7:30 and thereafter on the
half hour. The KFN property is on the east side of the Lower Road [page 36,
quad E55]
