Thanks Jean and Ron. The Buff-breasted Sandpiper was still at the sod farm on Sylvan Glen Road north of Port Hope at least until 4.30 this afternoon, August 17th. It was mainly on the strip of sod left in the second field north of county Road 74 on the east side of the road but also ventured onto nearby ploughed areas.
About 200 metres east of Sylvan Glen a narrow gravel road which is a dead end, Hawkins Road, runs north from Dale Road along the eastern edge of the sod farm. From this road we were much closer to the bird but of course looking west into the afternoon sun, so colours were very bleached. This would make good morning viewing though. Black-bellied Plovers, Horned Larks, and Killdeer were still there too and we heard an Upland Sandpiper call briefly but did not see it. The heat haze was quite bad. Directions: From Hwy 401 take the Welcome/Port Hope exit, Exit 461, and go north on Hwy.2 to the first traffic lights. Turn east on Dale Road, County Road 74, for about 1.5 km and turn north on Sylvan Glen Road. (Coming from Presqu'ile, Jean and Ron used Exit 464 and came north on County Road 28 to Dale Road, then west to Sylvan Glen).
