There is very little shorebird habitat in the lagoons. There is no true "mudflat" in any lagoon. The furthest west lagoon had lowest water levels with a small ring of shorebird habitat around the edge. All shorebirds were in this lagoon. The south lagoon appears to be in the process of filling.
Highlights Lagoons (from east to west) Lagoon 1 2 Trumpeter Swans, 21 Black Terns Lagoon 2 2 Redheads, 2 Black Terns Lagoon 3 136 Bonaparte's Gulls, 3 Black Terns, and 1 Pied-billed Grebe Lagoon 4 1 Bufflehead, 1 American Widgeon, 5 Hooded Mergansers, and 5 Bonaparte's Gulls Lagoon 5 Shorebirds: 43 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Solitary Sandpipers, 9 Spotted Sandpipers, 11 Killdeer, 2 Short-billed Dowitchers, 1 Baird Sandpiper, 46 Semi-palmated Sandpipers, 40 Least Sandpipers, and 21 peeps 78 Bonaparte's Gulls, and 2 Wood Ducks South lagoon 350-400 ducks foraging throughout the flooded vegetation. Most birds were in the eastern 1/2 of the lagoon. Primarily Mallard, Gadwall, Green and Blue-winged Teal. Also 12 species of Dragonflies, and 4 Species of Damselflies present. The permits may be purchased at the Durham Region Transfer Site located at 1623 Reach Rd, Port Perry during the following business hours .... Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get to the transfer station, travel north on Hwy 12 past Port Perry [Hwy 7A] to the next traffic lights [Regional Road 8 = Reach Rd.] and travel east to #1623 on the north side of the road. The lagoons are located one road north of the transfer site east off Hwy 12 on Concession Rd. 8 [don't get confused as, despite the fact that these roads are both numbered "8", they are two different roads - one is a regional paved road, the other a dirt concession road].
