At 3pm today, August 22, there were two Buff-breasted Sandpipers actively feeding on the same grassy strip at the Sylvan Glen Road sod farm in Port Hope where the first was found a few days ago. One of them, briefly alarmed by a nearby tractor, raised its wings giving nice views of bright white underwings.
The birds are on the main strip of sod left in the second field north of County Road 74 on the east side of the road, but in the last few days the original bird has also been seen on other strips of sod to the north and south of this and on nearby ploughed areas. Directions: From Hwy 401 take the Welcome/Port Hope exit, Exit 461, and go north on Hwy.2 to the first traffic lights. Turn east on Dale Road, County Road 74, for 1.5 km and turn north on Sylvan Glen Road. Hawkins Road runs up the east side of the sod farm about 200m east of Sylvan Glen Road and is sometimes the better viewing spot.
