Hello Ontbirders
The American Avocet is still present at Chesterville. It is
frequenting the sewage ponds which are on the property of the Nestle
plant. This is private property but acess can be gained by asking
permission at the gate house at the main building located near the
railroad tracks in Chesterville.
This afternoon at around 5:00pm I saw a winter plumaged Forster's
Tern feeding along the dyke at Shirleys Bay between the boat launch area
and Innis Point. Again, I observed 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at
Shirleys Bay and 7 Lesser Black-backed Gull at Deschenes Rapids. The
number of Great Black-backed Gulls continued to increase with 250 while
Double-crested Cormorants rose to 275.

Directions to Chesterville: From Ottawa, take Bank St. south to highway
#43, the turn left, (east) to Chesterville. Once in the town, follow the
signs to the Nestle Plant. The Nestle Plant is located beside the
railway.
DIRECTIONS: Shirleys Bay: From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west to the Moodie
Drive exit. Go north to Carling Ave. Turn left at Carling and follow
Carling to Rifle Road (formerly Range Rd.) Turn right (north) onto
Rifle Rd. Follow
road to boat launch and park. Walk the road going west until you pass
the DND gate. A trail on your right heads into the woods and leads to
the
dyke. Lois Ave. is on your right as you travel north on Rifle before you
reach
the first parking lot.
****PLEASE NOTE**** YOU MUST OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM THE RANGE CONTROL
OFFICE BEFORE ENTERING THE DYKE AREA-- Call (613) 991-5740 and ask
whether it is possible to visit the dyke for birding.
