Along with Jim Fairchild and David Mud, we closely studied the reported
juvenile Tufted Duck late this afternoon at Humber Bay east and after a
great deal of discussion, could not eliminate the possibility of this bird
being a juvenile Lesser Scaup. To this viewer, and after examining some
texts, the head just didn't seem right for the former. I could not see a
rounded forehead with a flat crown. To me it looked for all the world like
the head of a Lesser Scaup. Nor did the reast of the bird's plumage
eliminate the possibility of it being the latter........in my opinion.

However, having said that, I'm far from being an expert in this area and
welcome the input of birders who are.

Humber Bay park is found south of the QEW on Park Lawn Rd
Park your car in the parking lot and walk east past the first inlet ( where
the Wood Duck winters) to the second inlet on the north. The bird was
swimming with Mallards.
