Karen and I did a fairly comprehensive sweep of the Owl Woods this
afternoon. We turned up 1 SAW-WHET OWL and 1 LONG-EARED OWL quite close
together just at the north entrance to the Pine Woods. There were
several flocks of PURPLE FINCHES numbering at least 20-25, as well as
good numbers of both KINGLETS, and WHITE-CROWNED and WHITE=THROATED
SPARROWS. Also seen were numerous HARRIERS, RED-TAILED HAWKS, one
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and one SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.

Amherst Island is 16 km. west of Kingston. Exit off the 401 at exit 593
and drive south to the very end. Turn right on hwy. 33 and drive 300 m.
until you see the sign to the ferry. The ferry leaves the mainland on
the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $5.00 round
trip.
