The AMERICAN AVOCET is still on the KFN property at the east end of the
island.  It was observed in the second pond and later on the south shore one
hundred metres from the stile.  Also, there was a flock of 50 BRANT flying
south, a flock of 12 LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON and 2
CASPIAN TERNS.
    The Owl Woods was full of migrating birds.  Some of the species observed
were 10 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 1 SCARLET TANAGER, 2 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 6
HERMIT THRUSH, both NUTHATCH species, both KINGLET species, 1 PURPLE FINCH,
1 WINTER WREN, 2 EASTERN TOWHEE, 4 species of WARBLERS and SPARROWS
everywhere.  In the Jack Pine Woods there were 2 SAW-WHET OWLS in the same
tree and 1 LONG-EARED OWL.
    At the Fishing Village there was 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK and 2 LINCOLN'S
SPARROW.  8 species of butterflies were seen for the day.  Meadow voles are
very plentiful.  Great weather and lots of birds.

Amherst Island [P36, D55 & 56]
Located 16 km. west of Kingston. Exit off the 401 at exit
593 and drive south on County Road 4 to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right
on hwy. 33 and drive 300 m.
until you see the sign to the Amherst Island ferry. The ferry leaves the
mainland on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $5.00 round trip. There
are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, but not
on
the island.  The K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island.
The Owl Woods is at the midway point of the seasonal road located 3.4 km.
east
 from the general store. The Fishing Village is at the south west tip of the
island.
