When the hawk flight didn't materialize this morning we turned our
attention to the hordes of sparrows and kinglets in the shrubby field
beside our hawk watch. A Screech-Owl call and lots of pishing brought out
a hatching year WHITE-EYED VIREO (dark iris), a Blue-headed Vireo, one each
of Orange-crowned and Nashville Warblers and lots of regular fall
migrants. Four Hermit Thrushes were particularly annoyed with the
screech-owl and approached closer than any of the other species!
Our hawk watch site is at the lake end of Pede Road just east of Port Bruce
in Elgin County on the Lake Erie shoreline. From Aylmer drive south on
Imperial Rd, turn left/east at Copenhagen onto Nova Scotia Line, turn
right/south on Pede Road and drive south to the end of road. Walk east
along the laneway and watch and listen for flocks of migrants in the dense
shrubs along the laneway. The property on both sides of Pede Rd and the
laneway is private so don't stray from the road.
