If you like little brown jobs (as I do) it was sparrow heaven at Little River. I found a tremendous fallout of sparrows in a scrubby field east of the Ganatchio Trail, adjacent to the site of construction of a new road. By systematically working this field for about 2 hours, I eventually tallied 10 species of sparrows, including a nice Clay-colored. There were so many sparrows present that I sometimes had 5 different species in view at a time, all close together, and affording nice comparative studies, e.g. Clay-colored versus Chipping, Chipping versus American Tree, Lincoln's versus Swamp, and so on. There were many Fox Sparrows in this group, along with an Orange-crowned Warbler and a female House Finch with an almost entirely white head. At 2:45, in the midst of all my fun, I was treated to great looks at an adult female Rough-legged Hawk that suddenly appeared on the scene.

The Ganatchio Trail/Little River area is best accessed by driving east on Little River Road from Lauzon, or taking Riverside Drive East and going south on Riverdale to Little River Road. You can also walk north from Tecumseh Road East up Penang and cross the VIA Rail tracks.
