this Saturday, October 25. Meet at 8 AM, north of Lockport,
at the Tops Market in Wrights Corners, on the east side of
Route 78 at Route 104. Visitors are always welcome on BOS
trips.]

Highlights of reports received October 16 through October 23
from the Niagara Frontier Region include BREWER'S BLACKBIRD,
SNOW GOOSE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, BRANT, NORTHERN SHRIKE,
RICHARDSON'S CANADA GOOSE and EARED GREBE.
October 17, a very rare BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was reported at
the feeder for several days, at the Wild Birds Unlimited
shop on McKinley Parkway in Blasdell.
Arriving winter visitors and migrants were noted this week.
October 20, 5 SNOW GOOSE at Sinking Ponds in East Aurora and
a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Keller Road in Clarence. October 21,
four BRANT on the Niagara River off Beaver Island State
Park. And, October 18, on the BOS field trip to the Iroquois
Refuge, a NORTHERN SHRIKE at Cayuga Pool.
Other highlights from the trip - At Iroquois - 14
RICHARDSON'S-type CANADA GEESE at Mallard Overlook, 5 GREAT
EGRETS and 12 GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Center Marsh. Seven
sparrow species at the north end of Feeder Road, including
LINCOLN'S SPARROW and FOX SPARROW. And at least 5 BALD
EAGLES and numerous RUSTY BLACKBIRDS throughout the refuge.
At the Batavia Waste Water Plant, 3 EARED GREBES, BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 8 DUNLIN and 15
waterfowl species highlighted by a record count of 2241
RUDDY DUCKS.
During the strong winds off Lake Erie on October 21, at
Athol Springs in Hamburg, a PARASITIC JAEGER plus COMMON
LOON, 5 GREATER SCAUP, 3 SURF SCOTERS and 2 COMMON
GOLDENEYES.
COMMON RAVEN again this week from the Wyoming County Town of
Bennington. This bird appears to be residing in a field
along Bailey Road. COMMON RAVEN was noted in the Cattaraugus
County Village of Franklinville and four more ravens, with
at least 6 BALD EAGLES, at Wolf Run in Allegany State Park.
October 19, a very good count of WHITE-CR. SPARROWS - 110 in
the Town of Porter. WHITE-CR. SPARROW and WHITE-THR. SPARROW
were also reported at several other locations this week.
Other reports - At the new pull-off viewing area of the
Niagara River along the Moses Parkway above Niagara Falls, 2
HORNED GREBES, hundreds of both GREATER SCAUP and LESSER
SCAUP, COMMON GOLDENEYE, 7 CANVASBACKS, 2 REDHEADS and 2
RING-NECKED DUCKS. On the ponds at the UB Amherst campus,
HORNED GREBE and SPOTTED SANDPIPER. MERLIN on the Ellicott
Creek Trail in Amherst. 4 PURPLE FINCHES at Four Mile Creek
State Park in Porter. And from Jamestown, a RED-BELLIED
WDPKR. was observed collecting safflower seeds from a feeder
and storing them in the bark of a Linden tree.
