Hello All Today Sat., Oct. 25, 2003 Stan Bajurny and I didn't wander any further than Lasalle Marina in the Burlington area and we did okay. We saw a lot of the expected birds, mostly waterfowl but we did have a few goodies.
First the subject birds and they were found mainly thanks to Dave Don and Tom Crooks, thanks guys. Stan spotted the 2 White-fronted Geese about 300 yards east of Appleby Line with a number of Canada Geese. They were resting almost on shore and with their heads tucked in at first they blended in with the Canada's but could not hide from Stan. This was after 3:30 pm. The Brant (2 of then in fact) were also with Canada Geese and also Mallards about 500 yards east of the extreme east end of Bronte Harbour at East St. Park and take the paved path along the lake to a small lookout area and check the geese. Be sure to watch the shore before you get to this area as they may feed anywhere along the algae covered rocks here. This was after 4:00 pm. Also here were about 28 Bonaparte's Gulls on the water and off Appleby Line were 9 Red-necked Grebes. At Paletta (old Shoreacres) Park we counted 65 red-necked Grebes and off Van Wagners Beach was a Red-throated Loon and approx. 5000 Scaup and 48 Surf scoters. The Burlington lift bridge produced a Peregrine Falcon hunting the beach. We had many other species but above were the highlights. DIRECTIONS PALETTA / SHOREACRES PARK IN BURLINGTON & APPLEBY LINE Exit the QEW Highway at Appleby Line. Drive south towards the lake to Lakeshore Road. Turn right (west) on Lakeshore Road and drive a short distance to Shoreacres Road (on your right). The park is across the street on the south side and the Paletta Park sign is easy to see. Drive in and park on your right and walk the woodland path straight to the lake.. The last street from the east before the park is Blue Water Place (on your left) and from the west is Inglewood Drive (on your right). Of coarse when you are on Appleby Line you continue on across Lakeshore Rd to the lake and check for the White-fronted Geese. BRONTE HARBOUR Exit the QEW Highway at Bronte Road and drive straight down to the harbour (cross Lakeshore Road) and turn left (east) on Ontario Street and then drive to East St. and park either on the street or in the parking lot. VAN WAGNERS BEACH & POND IN BURLINGTON From the Toronto direction exit the QEW highway at Centennial Parkway on the south end of the Burlington Skyway. Drive under the QEW and drive a short distance to the North Service Road, turn left and drive along the North Service Road until you pass Barangas On The Beach (a restaurant). Ahead you will see Hutch's (another eatery). Pull in to Hutch's parking lot and park and your at Van Wagners Beach. Van Wagners Pond is directly across the road from Hutch's and hard to miss. If you continue on back past Van Wagners towards Toronto you will come to the Burlington lift bridge.
