On the way to Hoak's "lakeside" restaurant in Athol Springs (near Hamburg
NY)in my quest for Jaegers on 11/13/03 about 8 AM approx. 30 snow geese were
attempting to cross the Niagara River from Buffalo just south of the peace
bridge and were not making much headway. At Hoak's saw one possible jaeger
at 50 yds. In 4 1/2 hours saw approx. 100 birds. Four hen and 2 drake
Buffleheads landed about 100 yards out and were the only positively ID'd
birds. I wore a jacket and winter coat and hat and the wind and cold and
water bothered me although I was in the 2nd floor dining room. The foam
from the whitecaps blew horizontally. Waves that ricocheted off the
breakwall and collided with incoming waves blew water over the top of the
restaurant. I watched water bubble up out of the window frames. Channel
2,4 & 7 were present. About 4:30 PM a flock of 9 swans and a flock of 7
swans rose from the Canadian side opposite Grand Island (~ 1/2 mile away)
and headed inland. At the time the wind was turning from westerly to
northerly.
