Hello Ontario birders. Today, Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 Stan Bajurny and I stopped off at Amherst Island for a few hours and were lucky enough to find a Snowy Owl (1st one reported as far as I know). Actually Stan found it as I lazily hung around the road and van observing Rough-legged Hawks and Northern Harriers.
The bird was in the southeast corner of the KFN property but at the time Stan found it but it was not visible from the road (at that time). A little aside - as we drove east out of Stella on the island we observed 6 Short-eared Owls perched on fence posts and flying off to our right (about 1km out of Stella) and felt that there were more of them than we observed. Also the Baird's Sandpiper is still at Owen Point in Presqu'ile Provincial Park and you Winter listers should keep your fingers crossed that it will remain there as the weather looks like it may stay warm. Turn right (east) and drive a very short distance to the ferry dock. The ferry runs every ½ hour from at least 7:30am. (Fee $5.00 per vehicle). KFN (Kingston Field Naturalist Property) On exiting the ferry turn left on Front Rd in Stella and drive east along Front Rd to where it curves into Lower 40 Rd. The area along the east side of this road is KFN property. PRESQU'ILE PROVINCIAL PARK Exit Hwy 401 at exit # 509 and drive south on County Rd 30 straight through Brighton going straight down Cedar St to Harbour St. Turn left (west) here and follow Harbour St to Lakeshore rd and turn left (south). You will almost immediately pass through the park gate (FEE). Drive straight ahead and follow the signs directing you to the Owen Point Trail.
