This is Chris Lewis reporting.
A variety of interesting birds was reported over the last week. A
first winter male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, near Pakenham, returned
to the feeder of Bob and Iris Jurmain on November 30 after a day's
absence. Birders must phone ahead to arrange a visit. Please
call 613-256-0160.
A dark mantled second winter SLATY-BACKED GULL at the Ottawa
Valley Waste Recovery Centre on county road 56 south of Pembroke
was last seen here on November 27 and was not present on December
1, although there was a first winter Thayer's Gull here. Please
call ahead for permission to enter the dump. Call 613-735-7537
and ask for Elizabeth, who will provide instructions.
Birds present at Shirley's Bay on November 30 included 2 Common
Loons, 1 Red-necked Grebe, 2 Surf Scoters and several Common
Goldeneye. One adult Brant and a Richardson's Goose were with the
Canada Geese at Andrew Haydon Park on the 24th.
15 Snow Geese were with approximately 5000 Canada Geese at the St
Albert sewage lagoon on the 25th. A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was
very close to show on the river, east of the Champlain Bridge, on
the 25th and male was on the Rideau River behind the Tennis Club
on the 22nd. A female HARLEQUIN DUCK was reported from this
latter location on the 22nd as well.
Two late Great Blue Herons and 2 Gadwall were on Mud Lake in
Britannia on the 22nd and 23rd. Good numbers of Lesser Scaup and
Common and Hooded Mergansers were seen in various locations
throughout the area, particularly on the Rideau River.
Raptor sightings included Northern Harrier, Sharp-shined Hawk,
Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks and Merlin, also
in various locations.
A few very late shorebirds were at the Embrun sewage lagoons,
namely 3 Greater Yellowlegs and 3 Dunlin on November 26. Also on
the 26th, four Short-eared Owls were still being seen at dusk
along Earl Armstrong Rd.
A male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER has been highly visible along
McCordick Rd south of North Gower. It was most recently reported
on the 27th, visiting feeders and caching seeds in the trees on
the properties around 6848 McCordick. Please stay along the road
and be respectful of the residents here.
Northern Shrikes were reported from Earl Armstrong Rd as well as
Anderson Rd, both on the 23rd, and at the Hilda Rd feeder at
Shirley's Bay on December 1.
Two Lapland Longspurs were among a flock of Snow Buntings at
Kinburn Side Rd, west of Ottawa on 29th. These birds were not
tied to any particular field and were not seen the following day.
