One of the most exciting days ever on the river. Highlights, locations, and some details follow:
MEW GULL - adult(?) reported on the breakwall below the control gates in the later afternoon. Found by ??? NORTHERN GANNET - two juveniles; one at the Whirlpool, seen flying downriver toward the power plants; another seen below the control gates, repeatedly floating down and flying back and landing on the water. Found by a group of Ohio birders. TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE - Grand Island, NY; West River Parkway between Bedell and Sunset (1/4 mile north of Bedell). This bird was in sumac and other shrubs, right along the river. Found by Susan O'Donnell. CALIFORNIA GULL - two adults at Adam Beck. BLACK-HEADED GULL - an adult seen at the Whirlpool; another adult seen at Queenston, 1/4 to 1/2 mile upriver from the boat ramp. GLAUCOUS - first winter above the falls.
