Hello Ontbirds people,

Today (7 December), a male Three-toed Woodpecker was discovered in the west
end of Ottawa ~ 11:40 AM by Jan Slumkoski, Ken Garrett & Lois Knaggs. This
was along a public trail off Kerwin Rd. (formerly River Rd.). These folks
report that the bird was approx. 20 feet off the trail, pecking away at a
pine (sp?) tree.

DIRECTIONS: from Ottawa, take Hwy 417 west to the Eagleson/March Rd. exit
(#138). Go north on March Rd. and follow this until Dunrobin Rd (a
T-intersection with traffic lights). Turn right onto Dunrobin Rd. and look
for Kerwin Rd. on your right. Go right on Kerwin and cross the railroad
tracks. The public trail comes up shortly on your right, immediately
opposite house # 881. Take care when you park along the shoulder, as the
ditches are deep. The bird was seen from the trail just after it bends to
the left, near a fallen tree across the path. There is no way of knowing
yet whether or not this bird will linger or if this will be a good "northern
woodpecker winter" in Ottawa, but this is a fine start....(by the by, there
were also small #'s of Common Redpolls & Evening Grosbeaks in the vicinity).
Thanks to Jan, Ken & Lois for this wonderful welcome to winter in our neck
of the woods!
