Just to let you know that the well tended North Bay landfill site has at
least 8 Glaucous Gulls, 2 in adult plumage, 2 Iceland and 3 or 4
Black-backed easily found amidst its 400 or so Herring Gulls of all ages.
They won't be here for very much longer, since this cold weather is quickly
causing the lakes to freeze - and then they will be gone.
A group of 23 local birders scouted the area within 50 miles of North
Bay on Saturday and found 45 species of birds. These included a fair number
of both winter grosbeaks (but no Black-headed), redpolls (which will be the
main "finch" this winter). A striking adult Bald Eagle was at the landfill.
Forty miles west of the city within a farming area south of the town of
Verner, Rough-legs, including a very handsome dark-phase are holding forth
along with at least a couple of Northern Shrikes, and one Black-backed
Woodpecker regularly in a local woods.
Common Loons and Hooded Mergansers can still be discovered in the
deeper, open water lakes, while creepers and golden-crowns may be found in
the denser woods, especially south near the town of South River.
