RARE BIRDS:
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD still at feeders at #24 King Pitt Rd. From Nov. 21 to
Dec. 10 and counting? It was last reported seen at 0825, Dec. 10, not since.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was reported by Clare and Bernard Muller 0n Dec. 9 in woods
from Hwy 15, about midway between Portland and Smith's Falls. It has not
been reported again to my knowledge.
A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was reported on Dec. 9 by Clare Muller and Maggie
Crothers on Wolfe I. See Wolfe I. Report below for details.
AMHERST I. [page 36, quads E54 & 55]
Damon Pickard reported for Dec. 10: "We saw a snowy owl on the KFN site. In
Owl Woods we saw several owls but only fleeting glimpses and so were unable
to identify them. We did see a pair of northern harriers and a couple of red
tailed hawks."
KINGSTON EAST
An adult male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at 24 King Pitt Rd. about 3 km. East of CFB
Kingston. No reports of a sighting since Dec. 10 at 0825.
CONDITIONS: The owners are birder-friendly. They request that visiting
birders not block any streets or driveways nearby Please visit in small
groups, 5 or 6 persons at a time are welcome to watch the hummingbird feeder
on the south side of the house from a distance of 20 ft.
Sylvia Naylor from Dianna St. (off King Pitt Rd.) Reported on Dec. 9:
"Yesterday, the 9th, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER came to my feeders. It
actually arrived at the same time as two female HAIRY WOODPECKERS and left
at the same time."
WOLFE ISLAND [page 36, quad E57]
On Dec. 10 I went to Wolfe I. To verify a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE found by Maggie
Crothers on Dec. 8 or 9. I went to her home around 1:00 p.m. and was able to
see the BARROW'S from the beach behind the house at house # 692 on Hwy 96
between the 5th and 4th lines. The BARROW'S was an adult male.
Directions: WOLFE ISLAND MapArt Ontario Road Atlas [Pge 36, Quad't E56, 57 &
58]
Wolfe I. is across the St.. Lawrence River from Kingston and it is reached
by a free car ferry which leaves from the Kingston terminal on Ontario St..
at the bottom of Barrack St.. and lands at Marysville on Wolfe I..
Conditions: The home of Maggie Crothers and Rob Stewart is on Hwy #96 about
2 km. west of Marysville. Their house cannot be seen from the Hwy but there
is a sign #692. They are birder- friendly. Birders are welcome to look from
their back yard or beach. The adult male BARROW'S was well off to the east
in a small bay among Mergansers and Mallards when I saw it. Note: Ducks are
now very skittish in the Hunting Season. Approach slowly with care.
On Dec. 10 there were TUNDRA SWAN a at Reeds Bay and Bayfield Bay and South
Shore road totaling over 200.
For the Kingston C. B. C. Please note that on Dec. 1, there were 10 or more
SHORT-EARED OWLS seen and heard at dusk and after dark around the fields
near Reeds Bay Rd. and Hwy 95 and around the 8th Line between Reeds Bay Rd.
and Baseline Rd.. A SONG SPARROW in the marsh at the foot of Button Bay has
been responding to pishing on my last 3 visits.
CARTWRIGHT POINT [P36, D56], {page 48 & 49, quad N20 & M21}
At Cartwright Point on Dec. 11, a CAROLINA WREN was calling and
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK visited our feeders @ 14 The Point Rd. Our RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER was last seen on Dec. 3.
