OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - DEC 12 2003 AT 9:00 AM

This is Chris Lewis reporting. Just an update of recent bird
sightings prior to the upcoming Christmas Bird Counts. The
Ottawa-Gatineau CBC is this Sunday Dec. 14, the Pakenham-Arnprior
Count is on Dec. 26, and the Dunrobin-Breckenridge count will be
held January 4, 2004.

On Dec. 8 a Great Blue Heron was at a pond on Leikin Dr off
Merivale Rd behind the JDS building, and an immature Snow Goose
was on the Rideau River behind Carleton Lodge along old Hwy 16
north of Manotick. A male Ring-necked Duck was on the Rideau
behind Riverain Park at the end of MacArthur Ave north of the
Tennis Club on the 10th.

Four Short-eared Owls were at the S-curve on Earl Armstrong Rd at
approx. 4 PM on Dec 9. On the 8th two Cedar Waxwings and a
Northern Shrike were observed in the Alta Vista area.

Both a male and female American THREE-TOED WOODPECKER were
reported from the trail between Kerwin Rd and Riddell Rd west of
Kanata on the 7th and 8th respectively. A late Winter Wren was on
the Quebec side at the bridge along the bike path west of the end
of Vanier St on the 7th.

Two Song Sparrows were seen near Andrew Haydon Park south of the
walkway under Carling Ave on the 10th. A Vesper Sparrow 1st
reported from Akins Rd at Eagleson Rd on the 7th was still present
on the 10th.

A Lapland Longspur was feeding on spilled corn on the roadside
with a flock of approx. 300 Snow Buntings on Old Coach Rd at
Donald B. Munro near Carp on the 10th. Good numbers of Horned
Larks were in seen in this area as well. Back on the 6th, a Hoary
Redpoll was with Common Redpolls near the south end of Vances Side
Rd between Dunrobin and Woodlawn.

Farther afield, just north of Almonte, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was
perching on trees and hydro poles along Clayton Rd approx. 50
metres from the 1st bridge over the Indian River - this was on the
8th; the bird has not subsequently been reported. The male
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK near Pakenham was last reported on the 9th but may
still be in the area.

Finally, an immature PURPLE GALLINULE was rescued in the Westboro
area on November 30. It evidently had mild impact injuries but is
recovering very well at the Wild Bird Care Centre on Moodie Drive.
Visiting hours at the centre are 12:00 - 3:00 PM.

Thank you - Good birding!
