OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY DECEMBER 15 AT 8:30 PM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
The Ottawa-Gatineau Christmas Bird Count was held yesterday,
December 14. A preliminary total of 74 species was recorded in
rather unfavourable weather with strong east winds.
Waterfowl on the Rideau River in the general vicinity of Riverain
Park and the Rideau Tennis Club included a Wood Duck, 2 Ring-
necked Ducks and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers. On the Ottawa River,
the open water between Britannia Bay and Bate Island hosted 1
Common Loon, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, 3 Bufflehead, 2 Hooded
Mergansers and 1 Red-breasted Mergansers. At Remic Rapids there
were 2 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, both males, very close to the shore,
just east of the Remic Rapids lookout.
Buteos were well represented on the count with good numbers of
Red-tail and Rough-legged Hawks in most sectors, as well as 4
Northern Harriers. An adult Peregrine Falcon put on a spectacular
show over the Chaudiere Falls as it repeated attacked a second
winter Bald Eagle. The eagle evidently ended up at Lac Leamy in
Gatineau.
A Northern Saw-whet Owl was found in the Clyde Ave woods and a
Long-eared Owl was in the Mer Bleue area. Neither of these owls
was reported today.
Two very late Wilson's Snipes were in a ditch behind the National
Research Council building at Montréal Rd and Blair Rd. Good
numbers of Glaucous Gulls and Iceland Gulls were seen on the ice
on the Ottawa River and a record high total of 3174 Great Black-
backed Gulls were counted as well. A Belted Kingfisher was at
Parc Brebeuf on the Québec side of the river and a Northern
Flicker was found in the Britannia area.
Late songbirds included a Ruby-crowned Kinglet near the Ottawa
General Hospital and a Common Grackle at Oval and Crescent streets
off Vanier St north of the Lower Aylmer Rd in Québec.
The first Bohemian Waxwing was in Québec as well, a single bird in
Gatineau.
A record high number of 384 Dark-eyed Juncos were counted and
Northern Cardinal numbers were just shy of the previous record.
Numbers of winter finches were low overall. All sectors reported
House Finch and Common Redpoll and most sectors had Pine Siskins.
No Evening Grosbeaks were reported; however, 6 Pine Grosbeaks were
found on the Québec side near Pink Rd and HOARY REDPOLL visit a
feeder in Hull on Plateau, near Pink Rd.
Final results of the count will be posted on the OFNC web site
early in the new year.
Apart from the CBC, noteworthy birds included a Great Blue Heron
on December 15, at the settling ponds in the South Merivale
Business Park and a 4 Short-eared Owls were still flying at dusk
on the 13th along Earl Armstrong Rd south of the International
Airport.
A correction to the previous bird status line message regarding
the date of the Dunrobin/Breckenridge Christmas Bird Count this
count will be held on January 3.
Thank-you. Good birding.
