I saw the Gray Flycatcher yesterday (Saturday) morning, as did a number
of other people. It appeared twice (or was it three times?) in three
hours, for several minutes each time, working through the hawthorns
along the north slope along the creek valley from the cattails to the
fence some 200 m further west. On both occasions it worked from bush to
bush, occasionally perching in the open, then was gone. It seemed to be
feeding on something on the ground as it would fly from low perch to low
perch at the base of each hawthorn, then drop to the ground and peck
vigorously for a moment before flying up again. The cold temperatures
did not seem to be slowing it down at all. I last saw it at about 11:00 a.m.
Directions:
Follow highway 3 west of Cayuga crossing the Grand River. Go 0.6 km and turn
north (right) on River Road. Continue 4.6 km to Indiana Road W. and turn left
(west, the only choice) onto Indiana Road W. Drive 1.9 km and pull off on the
north side of the road. Walk across the field to the north (enter the property
at your own peril ) about 100 m. until you reach a line of trees. Veer LEFT or
WEST to a large SINGLE roll of hay, and a bit further west is a broken wood
gate where you can cross the barbed wire fence carefully. The cattails will
then be to your right and the creek valley ahead and to the left.
