Hi all, St. Clair River update: As expected, the recent cold weather has moved hundreds of diving ducks into the St. Clair River. Good numbers of Canvasback, Redhead, Common Mergansers and Common Goldeneye are present in various spots. Most Goldeneye are at the head of Stag Island, and the Cans and Reds are at Sombra up to north of Cathcart Park. There are quite a few Hooded Mergansers also. Of note this morning was a male American Wigeon at Fawn Island, and a Gadwall at Cathcart Park. Last weekend a male Pintail was at Guthrie Park north of Corunna, but not there today. Hardly any gulls, but a first basic Glaucous was just south of Lambton Generating Station. Two adult Glaucous were present last weekend, and were actually the first for the season there. There has been the occasional Bald Eagle patrolling the river.
Directions to Sombra and St. Clair River: Find Hwy 40 which runs N/S between Sarnia and Wallaceburg. Turn west on Lambton Rd. 2 (Bentpath Line) and take to Sombra on the river. Sombra Bay is right in front of you. Fawn Island is just to the south of the village. The St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33) follows the river along its length. ________________________________ Blake A.
