At 9:00am, Thursday, January 22nd, 2004, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
It was a relatively quiet week in the Hamilton area. Cold weather has likely kept many birds (and birders) looking for shelter from winter's icy grip. Those who did venture out reported BLUE-WINGED TEAL, PIED-BILLED GREBE, WOOD DUCK, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, GREAT BLUE HERON, EASTERN BLUEBIRD and SWAMP SPARROW at the Desjardins Canal, FOX SPARROW in the Hendrie Valley, BALD EAGLE on the ice in the harbour, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK in Aldershot, NORTHERN SHRIKE and COOPER'S HAWK in north Burlington, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and COMMON REDPOLL at Shoreacres/Paletta Park, plus KING EIDER and all three species of SCOTER at L.P. Sayers Park on the Stoney Creek lakeshore. Further afield, 20 or more EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW were reported from Grimsby, a SNOWY OWL was discovered near Shelburne (north of Guelph), HARLEQUIN DUCK, EARED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE and HOODED MERGANSER were seen in the Port Credit area, and at least five GRAY PARTRIDGE turned up at the Brantford Airport. A trip to Long Point yielded TURKEY VULTURE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 20 SANDHILL CRANES. Elsewhere, highlights from the Niagara River were five ICELAND GULLS, THAYER'S GULL, BELTED KINGFISHER, and CALIFORNIA GULL at Adam Beck, plus GLAUCOUS GULL near the Control Gates, and BLACK-HEADED GULL at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Last but not least, this week's yard reports include flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS near Gage Park and in Burlington. That's all for this week. Be sure to let us know about your sightings. Leave your name, telephone number, as well as the time and date of your call. Sightings can also be reported by e-mail. GOOD BIRDING!
