January 19, an adult PEREGRINE FALCON was chasing prey over the University Plaza Tops Market in Amherst. On the Niagara River in Fort Erie, Ontario, a single RED-NECKED GREBE was noted on January 18. Also the 18th, a SNOWY OWL and a SHORT- EARED OWL at the Niagara Falls Airport. From the Lake Ontario Plains this week, in the Town of Porter, a SNOWY OWL over Lake Ontario at Dietz Road. On the lake at Fort Niagara State Park, an ICELAND GULL and nearby on Woodcliff Drive, a GLAUCOUS GULL. Along Dickersonville Road, NORTHERN SHRIKE, EASTERN BLUEBIRD and a small flock of HORNED LARKS, LAPLAND LONGSPURS and SNOW BUNTINGS. In the Town of Yates, a large flock of HORNED LARKS with 7 LAPLAND LONGSPURS continues to be found on Route 18, one mile east of Niagara-Orleans Countyline Road. Also in Yates, a flock of 100 SNOW BUNTINGS on Marshall Road. At Golden Hill State Park, where 2 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were reported last week, 20 COMMON REDPOLLS feeding in the birches, plus two flocks of about 50 COMMON REDPOLLS moving along the lakeshore. At feeders this week - a large number of COMMON REDPOLL in the Wyoming County Town of Bennington. NORTHERN FLICKER at suet in the Village of Attica. In Elma, a CAROLINA WREN at a peanut feeder. 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS in Clarence. And in East Amherst, a NORTHERN SHRIKE impaled a starling in a backyard bush in the Golden Gate neighborhood. On Grand Island, at Beaver Island State Park, over 200 TUNDRA SWANS and over 2000 CANVASBACKS. A NORTHERN SHRIKE between the casino and golf course. At Buckhorn Island State Park, over 10 BROWN CREEPERS and a CAROLINA WREN. BALD EAGLES at several locations on the Niagara River around the island, including four eagles seen from I-190 on January 22, on the ice pack south of Grand Island. Gulls on the Niagara River this week - BLACK-HEADED GULL passing Niagara-on-the-Lake. CALIFORNIA GULL still down river from the Robert Moses power plant. Five to 10 ICELAND GULLS and a THAYER'S GULL at the power plants. Above the falls, a GLAUCOUS GULL at the control gates. And one observers noted there were no BONAPARTE'S GULLS at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo on January 18. Also this week, 3 SNOW BUNTINGS in Attica, and at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, a dark-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on the mounds and nearby at Times Beach, two CAROLINA WRENS.
