On a dull drizzly April 2 morn I took a stroll through the Lynde Shores woodlot in southwest Whitby. There was much singing and I had some great looks at several good birds as I slowly traversed the bird-feeder pathway. Included among the 23 species noted were 2 Hermit Thrushes and 1 Fox Sparrow. Bring on the warblers!!
In the water of Cranberry Marsh, immediately in front of the platform at the end of the north pathway off Hall's Rd. I managed to ID 11 waterfowl species, before most of them were spooked and took off to the east side. Among these birds were several of each of Green-winged Teal, Am.Wigeon, Gadwall, Mallard, Black D., Ring-billed D., Bufflehead, 1 Wood Duck, 2 Pintail, 1 Great Blue Heron, 3 Mute Swan and 2 Am. Coot. AS PER LAST YEAR IT APPEARS THAT THERE WILL AT LEAST 10 PAIRS OF COOTS ON THE MARSHLANDS. Hall's Rd. is the first street east of Lakeridge Rd. in southwest Whitby, running south from Victoria St. The Lynde Shores woodlot is accessed from the parking lot along Victoria St., just 0.5km. east of Hall's Rd.
