The thrush was seen this morning at first light, about 6:30, then irregularly
thereafter. It typically comes to the cracked corn put onto the flagstones in
the cedars along the south yard. It has never been seen by us anywhere but
along the south edge of the south yard.

Other regulars are a pair of Red-bellied Woodpecker (hopefully they'll both be
around long enough to be "P" or "T" for the atlas), Purple Finch (An adult male
sometimes; if you see a female note that there has been a "female" singing for
a couple of weeks now), Pine Siskins, a pair each of White-breasted &
Red-breasted Nuthatches as well as the usual winter feeder suspects. The last
redpoll was seen about a week ago. The Fox Sparrows & Rusty Blackbirds
reported earlier are new for the season. The grouse come sporadically as does
a turkey. Cooper's Hawks are more likely than Sharp-shinned although neither
are regular. Last week a Winter Wren was heard singing in the swamp (all
private property).

Please stay to the side of the road to avoid interfering with the local traffic
and be careful, the traffic can be faster than might be expected on a dead end
road. Also please avoid walking on the wood chips, there are spring ephemerals
there. In years past there have been daytime "break-ins" and so neighbours are
understandably "interested" in strange cars on the road. Don't be surprised if
they ask questions. To avoid interfering with traffic there is room for a
couple of cars in the driveway but please keep to the right to maintain clear
access to the left garage door. Thank you.

To Ontbirds,

To those of you who have seen the thrush we're glad you managed to. To those
who haven't but want to, we'll keep you posted (as will, presumably, other
birders) on it's status and wish you good luck.

There is one word of caution (sparked by an earlier posting) I would like to
make that should have been included in my own earlier posting. I would not
suggest that parking in a private laneway when the owner is away is something
that birders should be encouraged to do. As it was we came home from a tiring
drive and would not have liked to have dealt with shuffling cars before getting
in the house. Birders should only go on private property when they have the
express permission of the owners. We do appreciate the fact that all the
birders so far have kept to the side of the road and have been very friendly
and thoughtful.

Thank you and good luck.

This Varied Thrush seems to be under-reported but as of 4:15 Friday I
observed it along with Jerry Guild actively feeding in Flamborough. Also
there attending a silo feeder was a male Red-bellied Woodpecker and 3 or 4
Pine Siskins. The owner is currently away and parking in the driveway is
possible but we parked on Westover Road opposite the house where very
little traffic is present. Good luck.

DIRECTIONS: Take the QEW west to the 403. Continue westerly to Hwy 6 which
goes to Guelph. Go northerly past the road that will take you to the Lion
Safari to the next concession road which will be Conc. 8 West. Turn left or
to the west and proceed approximately 4 or 5 miles or so or until the
blacktop becomes gravel. That will be at Westover Road. Turn right, or to
the north, and go to house number 1605. The house will be on the left side
of the road. The bird is coming to a rock outcrop to the south side of the
house where the owner has cast bird seed.

Terry Osborne

Owling over the past two nights here in northern Muskoka (Huntsville area)
has been reasonably successful.

On Saturday, 10 April, Lance and Faye Allin and I searched the Allensville
area for two hours. We heard and then saw a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL on
Proudfoot Road, 100 m east of Domtar Road around 10:30 p.m. A large owl
flew over us at this location, but we could not get it to return or call.
It was probably a Barred Owl. Several other stops in this area were
unproductive. This junction is about 5 km SW of Huntsville.

On Sunday, 11 April, Lance Allin and I searched an area about 10 km SE of
Huntsville for two hours. At our first stop we immediately heard and then
saw a BARRED OWL on West Browns Road, 2 km east of Brunel Road (Muskoka Road
2) at 9:30 p.m. Tries for Northern Saw-whet Owls at several other stops in
this area were unsuccessful. At 11:30 p.m. medium-sized owl flew across
Brunel Road, just south of Renwick Road, in our headlights. It was either
an Long-eared or Short-eared Owl. A brief search in the area that night
failed to re-locate it. Renwick Road is about 3 km south of downtown
Huntsville.
