Hello all:

A few spaces have recently opened up for atlas work in remote northern Ontario. These are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for a remarkable birding experience. The ideal candidate is an expert birder able to do birding by ear in northern areas, has considerable experience in working in northern wilderness areas, and is physically fit (much walking through muskeg habitat is required). If we do not find the ideal candidate, we will be looking for people with as many of these attributes as possible. If you're interested, please call me at 519-826-2094 or fill in and submit the form on the atlas web page http://www.birdsontario.org/atlas/nontappl.html .

1. Attawapiskat River/DeBeers Diamond Mine site. Need two people: Approx June 14- July 3, but some flexibility in dates. A crew of four will make their own way to Timmins and fly to Attawapiskat on the west coast of James Bay. They will be taken by guides in freighter canoes to 2 squares on the coast near Attawapiskat for one week. They will then be flown to the DeBeers diamond mine site where they will cover the square containing the mine site. (The atlas work will complement work being done by biologists in the mine area.) They will then be taken by freighter canoe down the Attawapiskat River by guides in freighter canoes to cover one more square, and then to Attawapiskat to fly back to Timmins or Moosonee for the return trip home.

2. North Point, near Moosonee. Need one person: Approx June 7-18. A crew of four will make their way to Moosonee. They will then be taken by guides with freighter canoes to work on squares near North Point, about 30 km along the coast from Moosonee. They will then return by freighter canoe to Moosonee for the return trip home.

3. Moosonee. Capacity for 2-6 people: anytime between June 1 and July 5. MNR is offering accommodation in a staff house for people interested in atlassing around Moosonee. There is the possibility of accessing remote areas near Moosonee by freighter canoe or perhaps other means (yet to be arranged). Atlassers must make their own way to and from Moosonee.

Cheers,

Mike
