At 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 26th 2004 this is the HNC Birding Report:

Ahhh East Winds, the ideal conditions at VanWagners beach for birders to
hang out, socialize and look for goodies. This week on Tuesday east winds
blew well in the morning and several observers had some great results. The
best was found about 1:30 p.m. when a LONG-TAILED JAEGER was spotted off the
beach. Other birds seen that day included migrating Common Loons,
Black-bellied Plover, Bairds Sandpiper, Sanderling, Northern Harrier, and
Common Terns. A good sign of things to come.

In the area at Tollgate ponds birds continue to move in and out of the east
pond/wet area with Semipalmated Plover, Spotted Sandpiper, Sanderling,
Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper and Stilt
Sandpiper being seen on Tuesday as well. It is interesting to note that
numbers do fluctuate during the day as I returned in the evening to see all
the goodies that were seen at noon and most had left.

In Grimsby this week, water levels continue to be high at the Sewage Lagoons
but Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper and a Ruddy
Turnstone were seen here in the week. At nearby 50 Point C.A. Sanderling
were seen scurrying along the beach on Tuesday.

The AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was last reported on Hickory Island in the Dundas
Marsh last weekend. This bird could still be in the area. Anyone seeing
this bird, please update me.

This week at Courtcliffe Park in Carlisle Olive-sided Flycatcher, Warbling
Vireo, Blue-winged Warbler,American Redstart and a female Black-throated
Blue Warbler were seen.

At Waterdown Wetlands Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Chestnut-sided Warbler,
Black-throated Green Warbler and more American Redstarts were seen.

Interesting sighting of the week was down at Dundas Hydro Ponds where a
leucistic Barn Swallow was seen. Other reports from here and the Desjardins
Canal include 2 Ospreys and a number of Black-crowned Night Herons.

Finally, a Red-throated Loon was spotted off of Woodland Cemetery last
weekend and there were also two reports of migrating Common Nighthawks over
Burlington and Dundas.

Things are picking up nicely. Keep the sightings coming in. Until next
week......

Good birding,
Cheryl Edgecombe
