Highlights in the Ottawa area this past week included the following: Four GREAT EGRETS, very late for Ottawa, were still at Shirley's Bay as of Oct. 3rd. On the 2nd at Milton Rd. east of Carlsbad Springs there were 2 SANDHILL CRANES and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. A bird reported as a hybrid Greater White-fronted X Canada Goose was in the Carp water detention ponds south of Hazeldean Rd. at Terry Fox Dr. on the 1st. Both Horned and Red-necked Grebes are now being seen on the Ottawa River from the Shirley's Bay boat launch. An observer at the Innis Point Bird Observatory reported that 20 Northern Saw-whet Owls have been banded here since Oct. 1st. Waterfowl numbers at Shirley's Bay are increasing, with growing numbers of American Wigeon, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Green- winged Teal, Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Ducks. Three Red- breasted Mergansers were on the west side of the causeway on the 2nd and 3rd. Shirley's Bay also continues to be THE place to view shorebirds in Ottawa. Fourteen species have been reported from here since Sept. 28th, including: 8 Black-bellied Plovers, 2 American Golden Plovers, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, 1 Long-billed Dowitcher, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper, 1 Least Sandpiper, 5 Pectoral Sandpipers, 6 Dunlin, and up to 27 Wilson's Snipes. A late adult and juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker were seen in the old burn area off Whistler Rd. in Constance Bay on Sept. 28th and 29th. Also late for Ottawa were an adult Black-crowned Night- Heron on Mud Lake in Britannia on the 2nd as well as Osprey, Spotted Sandpiper and Belted Kingfisher at Shirley's Bay on the 3rd. Again, there have been very few reports of migrant songbirds other than Brown Creepers, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers, American Pipits and a few Rusty Blackbirds which are now moving through.
