Hello Ontbirders,

Today, Jens-Hermann Stuke and I had an adult Greater
White-fronted Goose at Shirley's Bay near Ottawa. The
bird flew in this morning and joined a small flock of
Canadas and left with them 30 minutes later. I saw a
Greater White-fronted Goose flying with a flock of
Canada Geese at Constance Bay in the late evening. It
could have been the same bird.

Other interesting sightings at Shirely's Bay included:
Peregrine, Merlin, Osprey, 2 White-rumped Sandpipers,
2 Red-necked Grebes and 3 Surf Scoters.

Shirleys Bay is west of Ottawa. Exit off Carling
Avenue at Range (Rifle) Road. Follow to the river.
Park and walk west along the river to the dike. Most
of the interesting birds were visible from the fence
at the base of the dike. Permission to access the dike
must be obtained by contacting the DND's Connaught
Firing Range Control Office at (613) 991-5740 or the
Range Warden at 991-5741. On weekends contact the Duty
Officer at 724-8716.

Hello Ontbirds people,

The 1st day of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club 10th annual Fall Bird
Count, with southwest winds (20 -30 kph) and intermittent showers dominating
the weather today.

Before the "official" count began at 3:00 PM today, a Greater White-fronted
Goose was found among ~ 1000 Canada Geese and 27 Greater (all white morph
adult) Snow Geese, at Milton Rd. & Smith Rd. northeast of Carlsbad Springs.
10 Sandhill Cranes also flew over this location while the geese were being
observed this morning ~ 9:00 AM.

At the St. Albert sewage lagoons, shortly after 3:00 PM today (so they're
"official", ha ha!), there were unprecedented numbers of White-rumped
Sandpipers and Pectoral Sandpipers for the Ottawa area, as well as other
shorebirds of interest. 141 individuals of 5 species at one location is
extraordinary by Ottawa standards in mid-October.

2 American Golden Plover
3 Greater Yellowlegs
1 Lesser Yellowlegs
49 White-rumped Sandpipers
78 Pectoral Sandpipers
8 Dunlin

DIRECTIONS FROM OTTAWA:

MILTON ROAD...Hwy 417 east to exit 96. Take Boundary Rd. (#41) north to
Russell Rd. (#26), right (east) on Russell then left (north) on Milton Rd.
to Smith Rd. The geese were seen approx. 400 m west along Smith Rd.

ST. ALBERT SEWAGE LAGOONS...Hwy 417 east to exit 79. Take #5 south towards
Crysler, turn left at the 90 degree bend onto the #7 toward St. Albert. The
sewage lagoons are west of the South Nation River. Look for the hydro line
that cuts off from the road south of the #7 on your right. There is a large
sign indicating the sewage lagoons. If you get to the bridge over the S.
Nation River, you've gone too far...turn around and try again!

Good Fall Birding,
Chris Lewis & Bob Bracken
(and thanks to Paul Mirsky for alerting us to the Greater White-fronted
Goose and Sandhill Cranes)
