November 6 - After observing the Western Grebe (9:35 - 10:30 AM) at Fifty Point Conservation Area in Grimsby, Ontario we went to Rock Point Provincial Park (on the north shore of Lake Erie about 30 miles west of Fort Erie Ontario) where there were 11 Sanderlings and 5 Dunlin, but NO Purple Sandpipers. About 8 miles east at Morgan's Point there were 28 Am. Black Duck, 8 Gadwall, 7 Tundra Swans, and 2 Greater Yellowlegs. At the source of the Niagara River at Fort Erie, Ontario, there were 96 Double-crested Cormorants, 36 Black Scoters, 42 White-winged Scoters, 89 Surf Scoters (including 3 males with orange bills, skunkheads, etc.) 600 Long-tailed Ducks (very unusual for this location) and 3000 Bonapart's Gulls. The vast majority of the ducks were Buffleheads, and Red-breasted Mergansers and the Greater and Lesser Scaup were also to numerous to count. Directions to Fifty Point C.A.:
Take QEW Niagara to Fifty Road. Head toward the lake and take the North Service Road around to the first road which branches off left (sorry forgot the name). There is a sign here pointing to the Conservation Area. Enter the Fifty Point C.A. (there is a $5.00 charge) and follow signs to the marina or go to viewing points out on the east side of the park. You may also park at the end of Kelson Road and walk down to the beach. The bird has been seen between the marina and the DND property about 150 m out. Be patient, sometimes it disappears. The CALIFORNIA GULL was NOT seen -- perhaps because the higher water level eliminated many of the rock perches available earlier this week. At least one adult LITTLE GULL was noted from the Queenston boat ramp. ***** To reach Queenston, exit off the QEW onto 405, then take the Stanley Ave detour and follow the signs through the roundabout towards Queenston. The boat ramp turn is off Front St. To reach Adam Beck, return to the roundabout and get on Niagara Parkway towards the city of Niagara Falls. The Adam Beck parking area is on the left just past the Floral Clock. -- Chris Burris Waterloo, ON From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Nov 6 20:17:12 2004 Return-Path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Delivered-To: [email protected] Received: from pop-a065d19.pas.sa.earthlink.net (pop-a065d19.pas.sa.earthlink.net [207.217.121.253]) by king.hwcn.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3DB50487CC for <[email protected]>; Sat, 6 Nov 2004 20:17:12 -0500 (EST) Received: from 1cust200.tnt3.waterloo.on.da.uu.net ([64.10.41.200]) by pop-a065d19.pas.sa.earthlink.net with esmtp (Exim 3.33 #1) id 1CQbqS-0001f1-00 for [email protected]; Sat, 06 Nov 2004 17:27:53 -0800 Mime-Version: 1.0 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sat, 6 Nov 2004 20:27:50 -0500 To: [email protected] From: "Christopher T. The sparrow was on the path near the hawkwatch station. Seeds are spread on the path every day. I've forwarded Mike's photos of the Golden-crowned Sparrow to Sandra Eadie for the OFO Photo Page. Directions: The hawkwatch station at Cranberry Marsh is near the end of Halls Road (second walkway going east), which is south of Bayly and just east of Lake Ridge Road.
