Earlier today, I had a late Black Bellied Plover on the reef at Kettle Point. As well there were adult and a single immature Tundra Swans. An adult Greater Black Backed Gull was loafing with the rest of the RingBilled and Herrings. Kettle Point is south of Port Franks on the Lake Huron shore.

Dave Bracken and I found a very unusual juv. Red-tailed Hawk. We were only 10m from the perched bird! I would love some input to the subspecies and or intermediate plumage. The birds mantle was that of a juv. Harlan's ( Black/dark), the banding on the tail was hardly noticeable due to the darkness and the upper portion of the tail had extensive whiteish. there was also a noticable band across the breast and the rest was similar to the red-tails found here. I did not see the underside of the wings. I must say that the first 2 seconds I saw the bird I had Dark morph Rough-legged Hawk on my mind.. Any photos of Dark western(subspecies) Juv."s may help...
