A telephone call today alerted me to a possible selasphorus hummingbird coming
to a feeder in Niagara Falls. The homeowner has provided me with photographs
that I have forwarded to ID Frontiers for assistance with identification. John
black and I saw the bird late this morning and we feel it is perhaps a female
Rufous or Broad-tailed. The homeowner, Janice Haynes, welcomes birders to
visit, but asks that everyone when entering her backyard stay well back and
behind a few lawn chairs set up as a barrier. The bird has apparently been
there since early September, starts feeding around 7:00 am, making numerous
visits to the feeders until sunset, and seems to favour the middle feeder. Her
address is 4579 Peach Avenue, Niagara Falls, ON.

Directions:
Take the QEW to the Thorold Stone Road exit in Niagara Falls. Now turn left
(east) to Dorchester Road, then right (south) one block to Pettit Avenue. Take
a left here and continue for about 1/2 km to Sherwood Road (directly across
from First Baptist Church on the right hand side). Turn left and proceed one
block to Peach Street to 4579, the second or third house on your right.

Hi Everyone
Spent a few hours birding the Ottawa River at Constance Bay this morning.
Had 2 juv. Red-throated Loons, 5 Common Loons and a 1st winter Glaucous Gull
off Constance Bay Drive near the fire station. The 3 Black-bellied Plovers were
feeding along the shoreline. The Red-headed Woodpeckers (3) were near the old
burn site picking up acorns from the Red Oaks and hammering they into the
poplar stumps. In the Torbolton Forest off Whistler Road I had a flock of 15+
Pine Siskin, 2 Pine Grosbeak, 1 Evening Grosbeak and my first Red Crossbill of
the fall.

                                                               good birding
                                                                    Bruce
