A trip up to Tobermory in the snow today was very successful, the NORTHERN HAWK
OWL was very obliging and posed for several photos. Also of possible note for
the area was one Red-necked Grebe at Tobermory proper and both the Hooded and
Red-breasted Mergansers at Wiartan.
Due to computer trouble I have lost all my contacts.
Good birding to all.

I just spoke with Janice Haines and she told me that her visiting Rufous
Hummingbird (Hannah) appeared at 0650h this morning at her backyard feeders in
Niagara Falls making it 101 consecutive days that the bird has come to feed.

Art and Janice have been surprised every day by the behaviour and generosity of
the birding community with nearly 500 people having visited their home since
November 16th. Many have made cash donations for sugar, and numerous others
have sent thank you cards in the mail that included a cash gift. She is
extremely thankful to everyone.

Santa is delivering the Haines a new computer sometime next week so Janice has
asked that I extend to the entire birding community, warm Christmas greetings
from herself, husband Art, but most importantly from Hannah.

Take the QEW to the Thorold Stone Road exit in Niagara Falls. Now turn left
(east) to Dorchester Road, then right (south) one block to Pettit Avenue. Take
a left here and continue for about 1/2 km to Sherwood Road (directly across
from First Baptist Church on the right hand side). Turn left and proceed one
block to Peach Avenue to 4579, the second or third house on your right.

Excuse my spelling and Grammar, I am Dyslexic
thank you.

I tried to post this yesterday but it seemed that their was some holiday
email gremlins playing computer games !

Yesterday Dec 11 2004 Carole Horner and I spent birding in the Toronto
and Durham area we dint drive 100 K but saw some great birds .

Starting with the Golden Crown sparrow at Cranberry march thanks to Doge
for his keen eyes and his help with finding the bird , will we wear
their we herd of a Snow Owl report Courtice rd and the 401 and we
desired that this was to be our next stop .

It tuck too pass to find the Owl ( only do to my miss ID of a large
pigeon ) but we wear forts to stop do to my cell phone ringing and the
Snow Owl was perched low on a fence post 50 yards from my car , the owl
then flue down to the train tracks and was still there when we left .

The reason my cell phone went off was yes to alert me to the refinding
of the Black throated Gray warbler in High Park , thank you Gerry Guild
( you get my vote for Birder of the year ) before we left to drive like
a Christmas shopper back to Toronto we did phone every one we could and
look for others.

When we arrived in High Park their was still a big grope looking for
the Warbler But first Carole got some great looks at the Wight Eyed Vero
vary low and actively feeding .

When Ron Pittway yells did you hear that you must stop birthing and
listen because their it was the BTGW flying around above our heads WOW
my 5 life winter bird in 11 days !!

What a blast as I have seed before "nothing beets birding in Ontario"
!!!

Cranberry march is found south of Victoria st off of Halls rd . in
Whitby .
Coutice rd is found east of Oshawa and is the turn off to Darlington
P.Park
And High Park is found hear in Toronto tack Colborne Loge dr north from
the Queensway and park by the Colborne loge walk up the rood both the
WEVO and the BTGW wear seen by the stars that lead down to the pond .

Good morning,

While filling the feeders this morning I noticed the
jays kicking up a stink. It turns out that they were
mobbing a Boreal Owl. The bird is moving around a bit
so may not be easy to find if the jays stop following.
At any rate, here are the directions:

>From highway 417, take the March Road exit at Kanata.
Follow this through Kanata until the road takes a 90
degree bend left. From here, turn right and follow
Dunrobin Road for about 15 minutes (past Dunrobin and
Woodlawn). Turn right off Dunrobin Road onto Constance
Bay Road. Take the 2nd right onto Monty Drive. The
bird was found at 146 Monty Drive. You may park in our
driveway (146 Monty) and look around the yard. If we
are home, we will show you where the bird was last
seen. Barring that, walk the neighbourhood listening
for mobbing. Please ask permission to enter
properties. If you find anything good around Constance
Bay, I would appreciate a call (number below).

Good birding,

Jeff

Gray Catbird, Evening Grosbeak & Redpolls in Meadow at Thickson's

Hi,
A Gray Catbird was in the brushy tangle between the Meadow and Corbett Creek
east branch, just north of the beaver pond. There's lots of fruit on
buckthorn, and also multiflora rose further up the valley. I first heard
some call notes I didn't recognize, then after I moved off a ways and
stopped, the bird began to call in a more typical fashion, and popped up
into the top of some nannyberrey where it continued to call. The steep side
of the valley is a dense tangle of dogwood, hawthorn and nannyberry, so if
the bird is disturbed it will disappear. The best approach is to "walk like
a mouse" in the words of the late Jim Wilson. This was the approach Don
Perks used in the same spot last May to see a Connecticut Warbler.
At 8:45 a single Evening Grosbeak flew over the Meadow, and at about
9:15 a small flock of redpolls flew over. Dawn until mid-morning is the best
time to listen for finches. I suspect there are some on the move each
morning, although this is the first Evening Grosbeak I have heard this fall.
The beaver pond has been re-flooded and there was a large flock of
puddle ducks feeding at the north end. Please try not to disturb them.

To reach Thickson's Woods exit from 401 to Thickson Road South in
Whitby. Proceed south past Wentworth Street to the Waterfront Trail. Turn
around, and park on the east side of Thickson Road. Walk east along the
Waterfront Trail and enter the woods on a path from the south side, about
200 metres east of Thickson Road. Follow the trails through the woods, some
of which access the Lake Ontario shore. To view the beaver pond and Corbett
Creek Marsh continue east about 100 metres past the entrance to the woods.
The meadow is across the Waterfront Trail immediately north of the woods.
The entrance is directly across the waterfront trail from the entrance to
the woods. To view a map,
