On some days the Canada Geese may be elsewhere, but lately up to 500 of them seem to enjoy "hunkering down" on the ice of Pringle Creek just to the west of the Brock St. S. bridge in Whitby. With patient scanning today (Dec.26) two of us found that amongst the many "neckless" birds was a large grayish "rock" with goldy-rust wing feathers and bulky gray rump-bustle. It was too windy-cold to wait for him to lift his head or stand up. This bird has been in the area for several weeks. Swimming nearby were: male Hooded Merganser, Pintail, Buffleheads, Goldeneyes & Common Mergansers. Exit the 401 at Brock St., Whitby, south through Victoria to the bridge-- park and look west.
Along Hall's Rd. over the past 3 days-- dark morph Rough-legged, 3 or 4 Red-taileds, 2 N.Harriers, 1 Sharp-shinned, 1 N.Shrike, several Pine Siskins, and at the north roadside feeding station-- Tree Sparrows, House Finches, Juncos, and 5 Cardinals. Exit 401 at Salem (in Ajax), south to Bayly, east through LakeRidge to the first street (Hall's Rd.), then south. Doug Lockrey, Whitby -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
