At about 4:30 this afternoon, my father and I saw a Short-eared Owl at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. It was alternately perching and flying around the periphery of the frozen bay that has the two long sets of docks in it. We got absolutely marvellous looks at it as it permitted us to pass as close as 15 feet from it without flying away.
At 5:00 we saw the original object of our outing, the Great Gray Owl. It was in the grove of spruce trees to the north of the southernmost parking lot, across the creek. It was sitting about 15 feet up on a dead branch of one of the spruces, about 30 feet from the path. Thanks a lot Jane Kirkpatrick for posting your sighting promptly! Col Sam Park is directly south of the corner of Kipling Ave and Lakeshore Blvd. Stay to the right and go to the farthest parking lot.
