There is still a BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD visiting Joan Love's feeders on the north side of Major Mackenzie Drive, first driveway west of Hwy. 27 in Kleinburg. The feeders are on the east side of the house. She has also had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW showing up and there is a juvenile NORTHERN SHRIKE that comes in to keep an eye on things from time to time. Politely identify yourself, of course. Just south and west of this, there were still about 20 HORNED LARKS in the fields on the west side of MacGillvray Road, about 2 kms. north of Rutherford Road. I observed no less than 20 Red-tailed Hawks on Hwy. 407 between Hwy. 400 and the Derry Road exit in northwest Mississauga today. There was one light-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on the south side of the highway near Mississauga Road. In the Newmarket area late this afternoon I flushed a RUFFED GROUSE when I got out of the car to look at a GREAT GRAY OWL on the west side of Bathurst, about 1 km. north of Green Lane. I observed three other GGOs on the next road west, which is Dufferin Avenue. One was just south of Miller Sdrd. in the sunken area west of the T-intersection and the other two were hunting in the field at address #18665. There was also an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE in this area. There was one more GGOW on the east side of Keele Street, about 0.7 kms north of Hwy. 9. All of the owls were seen after 4:30 p.m. There are, at the very least, 12 Great Grays in the Newmarket area, all of them north of Hwy. 9 and just west of the main part of town. They are most active late in the day, but seem to come out of hidden roosts on days when the conditions are, by human standards, fairly miserable. Keeping your distance will give these birds a chance to hunt successfully, which they need to do for survival. Hi there. This afternoon (the 16th) at 4:30 pm, I saw a pair of owls I believe to be barred owls in the Holland landing area. The light was poor and there was quite a distance between myself and the birds, however, they were quite upset by my presence, smaller owls, and lacked a distinct bright eye. I also assume because they were paired, they were a local breeding pair, not great grey owls. To find them, drive through Holland landing along yonge street, till it dead ends at the queensville sideroad, turn left, turn left again at the 2nd concession road, and left again on holburn rd. approx. half way between 2nd and leslie, is a patch of woods on the left, with an open field behind it, they were traveling from the right side of the road to the clearing on the left, soaring for mice. Please let me know if you see or can confirm the id. Three were seen hunting north of Yonge Street just off Bathurst on Marina Road. Another was seen on Dufferin St., north of Hwy 9, approx. 100 m. north of Miller Road and 3 more were seen on Keele St. about one km. north of Hwy 9. Many people were stopping to look as a few of the owls sat right next to the roadways. Their presence is becoming more popular and traffic jams are beginning to occur. Be careful when stopping along some of these streets since they have very narrow or no shoulders at all to stop along. Enjoy these beautiful birds, Wayne King King City PS. The Northern Shrike is still being seen at the north end of Bathurst St., north of Yonge St., in the open field area. --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo!
