After birding amherst island on january 16 (thanks to several local folks who
directed us to the 2 boreal owls, one great gray and one snowy), a short
exploration from about 4 - 5PM of the back roads north of the amherst exit off
of 401, turned up 8 or 9 additional great gray owls (plus one road killed GGO)
on a fairly short stretch of addington county route 6 north of the moscow dump
to the intersection with CR 7, and then east on CR 7 for a few km. All but one
of the birds were perched on roadside fences and appeared to be heading out to
hunt.

>
> This is Chris Lewis reporting.
>
> GREAT GRAY OWLS continued to be found in good numbers in many
> locations west of Ottawa, as well as in the Breckenridge area of
> Quebec this past week.
>
> The NORTHERN HAWK OWL and at least one of the Great Grays along
> Trail #5 at the southeast end of Gatineau Park were reported on
> the 12th. Please remember that this is a ski-trail and pedestrian
> traffic is discouraged. A BOREAL OWL spent the entire day at bird
> feeders in a backyard in Nepean east of the Queensway-Carleton
> Hospital on the 15th, but was not seen today. Two SNOWY OWLS were
> at Akins & Eagleson Rds. on the 15th; one very white male SNOWY
> OWL was in a field along Eagleson north of Akins on the 16th.
>
> On the 15th, a Golden Eagle was seen on the Quebec side in the
> area of Steel Line Rd. and Eardley-Masham Rd. Also nearby, in the
> Lac de Loup and Lac La Peche area north of Quyon, Quebec on the
> 16th, there were at least 2 Bald Eagles as well as a Northern
> Goshawk. A rare adult dark-morph Red-tailed Hawk continues to
> winter at the Gatineau Airport; it was most recently reported on
> the 12th. American Kestrels are now rarely seen in winter in the
> Ottawa area; one was found on the 15th at Kinburn Side Rd. and Hwy
> 417 on the 15th, and another was in Aylmer, Quebec, at Deschenes
> on the 16th.
>
> Three GRAY PARTRIDGES were found 3670 Woodkilton Rd. east of
> Kinburn Side Rd. on the 16th where the railway crosses the road.
> Nine Wild Turkeys were at Earl Armstrong Rd. between Limebank and
> Bowesville Rds on the 16th. Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue to
> hold out in Constance Bay, and the female RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER
> is still visiting the feeders at the Miller's farm at 6158 Rideau
> Valley Dr. south of Manotick...birders are most welcome, but
> please allow vehicles to pass on the laneway. A male BLACK-BACKED
> WOODPECKER was discovered early this afternoon along Eardley-
> Masham Rd., approx. 1 km. into Gatineau Park in a large stand of
> young pine and spruce at the crest of the hill. A Carolina Wren
> was heard singing near the corner of Rothwell and Naskapi Dr.'s in
> Rothwell Heights on the 13th, a flock of 13 Cedar Waxwings
> (unusual in Ottawa in winter) were at Hilda Rd. at Shirley's Bay
> on the 15th.
>
> A few reports of interesting "winter finches" have FINALLY started
> coming in. Although numbers have been small, recent observations
> may be encouraging for the Ottawa-Gatineau region as the season
> progresses. Pine Grosbeaks, White-winged Crossbills and Pine
> Siskins were found in the Steel Line, Lac de Loup, Lac La Peche
> and Eardley-Masham area of Quebec on the 16th, and farther afield
> on the Ontario side along Hydro Dam Rd. in the Calabogie Peaks
> area a pair of Red Crossbills was noted on the 15th.

> We observed two Boreal Owls on both days this past weekend, as well as a
> Great Grey on Sunday. On the east end of the island Sunday, we saw the
> Snowy Owl lurking on an Osprey(?) platform. Also noted was an immature
> Bald Eagle flying from east to west; an adult was spotted as we were
