On the Quinte Field Naturalists Saturday outing we located the Hawk Owl on
Highway 2 west of Welcome at about 4 p.m. It perched on the utility wires
just east of house # 3825 and completely ignored two emergency vehicles
which roared past with sirens screaming.

At 5 p.m. we located at least 5 short-eared owls hunting in a field opposite
house # 4440 on Lakeshore Road east of Newcastle. A great gray owl flitted
from post to post behind the same house which is on the north side of the
road.

Directions: For the Hawk Owl go north from highway 401 exit 461 (Highway 2).
Turn left at the flashing light in Welcome. Watch the wires as you proceed
west.
For the Short-ears continue west on highway 2 to Deer Park Road. Follow Deer
Park and Dickinson Roads south to Lakeshore Road. Go west on Lakeshore Road
which will eventually bring you to Mill St. in Newcastle (401 exit 440).
